K2Alpacas story starts in 2014 when three of Joe’s (aka AlpacaJoe) four kids left home. Reflecting on what to do and his job done rearing the kids he wanted to do something outdoors having spent 39 years working in offices. The family’s farm, which can be traced back to 1650’s, was always close to Joe’s heart. The farm is based in Kilcraggan Kilkenny, hence the businesses name ‘K2’ alpacas. While raised in a town Joe spent a lot of time on his Uncles Farm. After his Uncle died the farm was rented out. The first time in 370 years that the family have not worked the farm. Joe’s desire to get the farm up and running was the catalyst for the business. Traditional Farming was not going to work due to the high cost and low returns. Joe looked into alternative farming and during this research came across alpacas. But he did not rush into it, he spent two years researching alpacas and travelled all over Ireland and UK visiting and working on alpaca farms. His research took him to Peru and China and multiple EU countries. The more he researched alpacas the more he could not believe what an amazing animal they were. But Kilkenny was too far away so Joe, living in Wicklow, decided to sell his home and buy a farm locally.
